Help-- DVD

This 1965 comedy film starring the fab four is almost one long video. Fueled by a great roster of song hits, it's also the obvious inspiration for The Monkees TV show.

Yellow Submarine-- DVD

Al Brodax, who also created the Beatles cartoon show, produced this visual phantasmagoria of psychedelic animation. The "four lads who shook the world" come to the aid of Pepperland, menaced by blue meanies, to prove "all you need is love."

The Last Waltz-- DVD

The Band assembled about a million friends for their 1976 farewell concert, and this Martin Scorsese film ranks among the best concert videos. Like who? Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ronnie Hawkins, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, The Staple Singers, Muddy Waters, and Ron Wood. Leonard Maltin calls it a "truly wonderful documentary."

The Cliff Richard Collection-- DVD

British teen singer, Cliff Richard remained popular both before and during Beatlemania. His teen musical, The Young Ones, predates American beach party movies. Summer Holiday predates the Beatles' films. Wonderful Life, the third film in this 3 disc collection, lost its audience to another British group in A Hard Day's Night. The hit song, "The Young Ones" was later revived as the title of a Britcom about punks who are Cliff Richard fans, which ran on MTV.

Expresso Bongo-- DVD

Here's an odd, early, black and white Cliff Richard film, new to DVD. Although this is an edited version of the film, Cliff's lines and songs are intact in this little-seen cult classic.

The Monkees: Season One-- DVD

"Here we come, walking down the street." The mod four couldn't sing or play instruments but the network just advertised for four zany guys. Later they really did perform all those great Holland- Dozier- Holland songs, racking hits up the charts.

The Monkees: Season Two-- DVD

"We're the young generation, and we got something to say." Rhino went all out on packaging these two sets in boxes that look like stereos, with tons of extras of the fun foursome.

RoyOrbison: A Black and White Night-- DVD

Viewers who caught this 1988 black and white special on Showtime have been clamoring for it on video. T-Bone Burnett (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) produced this stylish special, which features one of Orbison's last filmed performances. But look who joins him in the back- up band:  Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello, K.D. Lang, Tom Waits and Jennifer Warnes, to name a few, performing fifteen songs. Over 100 reviewers on Amazon.com gave this video an average of five stars (the highest rating).

Say Amen, Somebody-- DVD

George Nirenburg's award-winning documentary chronicles two pioneers of the "Gospel Highway": Thomas Dorsey, formerly a piano player for blues singer Ma Rainey, and gospel songstress Mother Willie Mae Ford Smith. The Gospel According to Al Green-- DVD

In this PBS documentary by Robert Mugge, the reticent R&B singer comes clean about the events that led him to become the Rev. Al Green. Spellbinding concert footage shows that the Memphis minister has lost none of his soul.
