The Iron Giant Willy
Wonka Mary Poppins The Sound of Music
The
Chronicles of Narnia Box Set--
DVD
This isn't the new Disney/ Walden
Media Narnia movie. It's the nine hour BBC series that ran on PBS. This
three disc set covers the first four of the seven Chronicles of Narnia
books: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage
of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair (In later sets, the books have
been renumbered starting with The Magician's Nephew. See the
Wonderful Books section to compare the old and new numbering). These
BBC shows are not high tech; they're like filmed plays, with budget
sets and costumes as on Dr. Who, but are very popular. Tom Baker from
Dr. Who even plays Puddleglum. Check the great price.
The Iron Giant--
DVD
Brad Bird of the
Simpsons directed this animated triumph based on the short story by Ted
Hughs. Bird's version deviates substantially from the story to create
his own memorable tale in this widely-hailed Warner Bros. feature film.
October Sky-- DVD
The
widely acclaimed film based on Homer Hickam's memoir, Rocket Boys, by
the producer of Field of Dreams. Like My Dog Skip, this movie looks
like it was filmed in the 'fifties.
Brother Sun,
Sister Moon-- DVD
Franco Zeffirelli's
lyrical story of Saints Francis and Claire, with a captivating
sountrack by Donovan. An audience favorite, much loved and long
awaited, now on DVD.
Jesus of Nazareth-- DVD
Before Mel Gibson's
Passion, Franco Zeffirelli offered this masterful miniseries written by
Anthony Burgess (who also wrote the A.D. miniseries. Although rumours
led to a
pre-release boycott, the film was later praised by leaders of all
faiths. Over six hours on two discs.
Romeo and Juliet-- DVD
Few
treatments of the bard can match Franco Zeffirelli's visually
stunning film. Resonant in echoing the play's
sensibilities, engaging and sweeping in scope, it remains an
audience favorite.
O Brother Where Art
Thou?-- DVD
With a tip of the
hat to Homer's Ulysses, this Coen Brothers film takes off on its own on
a wild trip to discover American music. And what music it is! T-Bone
Burnett and the Coen Bros. searched the highways and byways for three
years to discover true country roots music, and the amazing soundtrack
is only matched by the riotous story and lavish photography of this one
of a kind film.
Down From the Mountain--
DVD
The first thing
audiences say coming out of a showing of O Brother Where Art Thou? is
"Where can I get that amazing music?" and the CD soundtrack regularly
sold out. This video presents live performances by artists in the film,
including Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, The Cox Family,
John Hartford, and Ralph Stanley at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium
(2001).
Willy Wonka and the
Chocolate Factory-- DVD
The only thing more
fascinating than this film is the story behind it. If it looks like
this adaptation of Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory" was made with more love than money, it's because it was.
This widescreen anniversary edition goes behind the scenes of Gene
Wilder's best vehicle to sample this tasty treat of "pure imagination."
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang--
DVD
The novel was by Ian
Fleming, creator of James Bond, but you can't fail to miss the script
writing touches of Roald Dahl. Regularly dismissed by critics as
"flawed," this very British 1968 film has everything audiences love:
flying cars, castles, pie fights, and Dick Van Dyke at his unsinkable
best.
The Gnome-Mobile-- DVD
Of all
the 'sixties Disney live action fantasies, this unassuming 1967
film remains an audience favorite, and features one of the last
on-screen appearances of Walter Brennan.
Mary Poppins-- DVD
There are so many
reasons to love this wonderful Disney adaptation of P.L. Travers'
classic story, and forty years later, this 1964 film is still a joy to
watch. It's also a textbook study in seat-of-your-pants special
effects, when the Disney studio dove in and tried all sorts of
experimental techniques, not only in animation but also live action
films. Mary Poppins was by far Julie Andrews' plum role, but what about
Dick Van Dyke as Bert, the chimney sweep? Or Ed Wynn? The list goes on
and on, not to mention the choreography, the animated sequences, the
acting, the story, and of course, the songs. Supercalifragilistic!
The Sound of Music-- DVD
What can one say
about Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1965 musical about the Trapp Family
Singers that hasn't already been said? The songs have passed into the
American vernacular, and the hills are alive with The Sound of Music.
Fiddler on the Roof-- DVD
If I were
a rich man, I'd buy an extra copy of Norman Jewison's delightful 1971
musical, Fiddler on the Roof. Thirty something years later, the tale of
Topol is still one of the most- performed musicals, and we're still
singing the songs. Now on DVD.
